Simon Metz was born on September 10, 1890 in Bronx, New York. When he was born he appeared to be fine, it was not until he started growing that people realized something was wrong. He turned out to have microcephaly, which is when your faces continues to grow at a normal rate, but the head does not. His condition gave him mental retardation and he had the brain of a 3-4 year old. People referred to him as a pinhead. This was never a problem for Simon. He became part of the circus with the help of George Kortes. From then on he was called Schlitzie. He has many accomplishments. He appeared in many movies like, Freaks. He was part of many different circuses. In 1936, George Surtees became his legal guardian. When George Surtees passed away Schlitzie was institutionalized because Surtees’ daughter did not want to take care of him. While institutionalized Bill Unks saw him and convinced the hospital to let Schlitzie go under his care and leave the hospital to be part of the circus sideshow again. He spent his final days with performer friends. Sadly, our superstar died at the age of 81 in Los Angeles. Schlitzie lived a wonderful grateful life despite some hardship he went through. He never failed to put a smile on people’s faces. Rest In Peace Angel.
The obituary gives a view to what he had accomplished during his lifetime. I looked at how obituaries were written and used websites about the marvel to be able to write about his life and accomplishments.
